Yearling Diet

Feed your yearling this much daily. It should equal about 4-6 grams or .141 oz. to .211 oz.

This doesn't sound much more than the hatchling amount but doubling the amount only increases the weight by a couple grams.

The feeding schedule should be as follows:

Days 1&2.. greens alone (staple greens) such as Endive, Escarole, Dandelion Greens, Turnip Greens..avoid Kale and no Spinach!

Day 3.. fruit alone (staple fruit) such as Strawberry, cantaloupe, plum, peach, pineapple..etc. Avoid citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, lemons..too high acid..especially tomatoes. "Seldom" Bananas!!!

Day 4&5.. greens alone (staple greens)

Day 6.. fruit "treat".. (something other than the staple fruit)

Day 7.. protein alone (well re-hydrated catfood).. dowsed with Calcium carbonate powder - no D3

Repeat schedule

Calcium & Protein Supplements

Supplementing starts at 6 months or 3" SCL. Initially, use half the amount shown for your 6 month to 1 year old hatchling.

As yearling's, continue supplementing like so:

Calcium - As yearling's, they will be getting their D3 through their diet and natural sunlight so there is no need to supplement with Calcium D3. Dandelion greens/flowers are the best staple at this time.

Protein - Protein is provided to our yearlings using Purina Pro Plan Extra Care Adult Cat Weight Management Formula once per week. On "protein day" the catfood is the entire meal for that day = to about half of a regular meal.. "protein" goes a long way.. 10-12 pellets will be ample!

Calcium is sprinkled onto well dampened pieces of the catfood shown to the right. Shown here ONLY is how much Calcium is sprinkled on a typical meal for 8 adults! The proportion is what is being illustrated here. A typical meal for a "Yearling" would again be 10-12 pellets.

For the second season now, we have followed the above - When you follow this feeding routine, you should end up with a healthy, good looking redfoot like the one to the right.. if not, something is out of balance! (you haven't been supplementing before 6 months have you?)

Shown here is Terry's '05 keepers. Note the amount that is being fed to "7" of them. All "7" of these beauties are at one year. With the exception of the 2 cherryheads..these are the colors of the bloodline in his breeders.
Chucky & Blondie, both around 4 months were eating comfortably until bully Einstein (at almost a year) showed up and started eating everything. Notice the size difference.. and Einstein was not overfed. This is typical growth rate of hatchlings when fed the correct amount of greens and fruit daily. Remember....greens and fruit are fed on separate days!
If you watch close.. at (1min. & 40sec.) Einstein will look at both of them.. he was afraid they were going to get his!
